About the Green Party
Government by the people: Our precious heritage
A precious heritage
— government by
the people and for
the people
The Green Party is composed of regular citizens who have had enough of business-as-usual politics dominated by special interests, cronyism, and corruption. We believe that clean government can be the solution to the problems and injustices of society. We trust our abilities to self-govern, as embodied in the ideal of "government of the people, by the people, and for the people."

To see how our platform differs from that of other parties, you can read our Ten Key Values. We believe that policy can be implemented that is true to these ideals. In more than 500 government offices around the country, elected green officials are proving this theory to be correct.

What We Do

Greens provide real solutions for real problems, because our members are working with people like you on local issues facing our communities. Whether the issue is universal health care, fair business practices, affordable renewable fuels, fair election practices, or living wages for workers, Greens have the courage and independence necessary to take on the powerful special interests.

The Green Party was founded in the United States 21 years ago. As a result of the hard work of Greens across the country, the Federal Elections Commission officially recognizes the Green Party of the United States.

The Proud History of Third Parties in America

 We deserve clean government
Proud to stand up
for what's right

Over the centuries, American third parties have been at the forefront of many changes we now consider essential, including the 8-hour day, voting rights for women, and the abolition of slavery.

The Republican Party itself began as a third party movement 150 years ago, when Abraham Lincoln and other anti-slavery activists left the dying Whig Party. While many had joined the Abolitionist Party to help free the slaves, it was the Republican Party that caught fire and became the viable alternative to the Whigs.

With Your Help, We Can Win

 Ballot Box
This November,
stand up for what
you believe in

It is time to move beyond the two-party system. Our government leaders give us excuses about why things cannot be changed, while we have to live with their failed healthcare, living wage, pension, and small business policies. We can do better than this, and with your help we will.

Along with direct work on issues, the Green Party also supports electoral reforms such as Instant Runoff Voting (IRV). IRV encourages coalition-building instead of negative attacks against opponents, and allows each of us to vote for our favorite candidate instead of the candidate we dislike least.

IRV allows the voter to designate all preferences, and is used to award the Heismann trophy, select the Academy Awards, and even to pick the Candidates of the Utah Republican Party. With IRV, the majority of voters must approve of a candidate. No longer will elected officials divide us with negative campaigning and then win races with a mere plurality of votes.

 Clean Elections for Mainers
Clean Government:
A Return to Maine
Values

The Green Party is the fastest growing political party in America, and includes college students, senior citizens, and all ages in-between. In Maine we increased the number of Greens by 25% last year alone. The only other two parties in the state both lost enrollment.

We need compassionate, forward-looking people like yourself to serve as candidates, donors, and volunteers. With your help, we can build a party and a nation that are focused on healthcare for all, peace, justice, living wages, strong local businesses, and accountable local governments.
