LaMarche Conducts First Direct Query of Cell Phone Users

Portland, Maine — Pat LaMarche, Green Independent candidate for governor, is reaching out to Maine's cell phone users to see what they view as the priorities facing Maine. Current polling models are based on reaching land line users, but students, younger voters, those without land lines, and workers who are out of the home a lot tend to get underrepresented in those polls.

Starting today, students and any Mainer with a cell phone can text the word "Pat" and a topic (example: Pat Health Care) to the number 30644, and their priorities will be registered with Pat and her campaign staff.

Tonight, Pat will be speaking at the University of Maine in Orono, where her speech will be based on the top three topics that students and Maine citizens send to her via text message.

While a few national political figures have announced mobile voter outreach and Get Out the Vote efforts, Pat's is considered by industry expects to be the first serious use of cell phone technology in a campaign in this country. Pat also used Online Townhall meetings and a website considered "historic" by the Library Of Congress to reach out to people in all corners of Maine.

"A responsible governor would use all available technologies to make sure that everyone is included, everyone is heard, and everyone gets a fair chance to participate," said LaMarche. "Those are the Maine values I was raised with, and that's the Maine I want to see again."
